Music is that which cannot be said but upon which it is impossible to be silent.
- Victor Hugo

God has blessed us with great powers of expression - expression that generates powerful energy, and, in turn, blesses our community. At Malone, there are a wide variety of opportunities in music both on and off campus. Music at Malone is open to those who want to participate and use and develop their talents, and to those who want to build a career by studying music, music education, music production, and music ministry. Academic programs for musicians are selective and demanding, but opportunities to simply enjoy music for music's sake are abundant and inviting.

Thank you for your interest in our programs!

Sincerely,
Dave Donelson, Ed.D., Chair, Department of Music

Malone University is a community where beauty is celebrated and embraced, whether it is seen, heard, or felt. Student and faculty musicians interpret the classics and compose new works. The Department of Music at Malone University offers degree completion programs in music, music education, music ministry, and music production. There are also opportunities for the major and non-major in piano pedagogy. Performing ensembles are open to all students regardless of major. Instrumental, vocal, and piano scholarships are available to both music majors and non-music majors.

The faculty of the Department of Music, realizing the importance of the preservation of the arts, is committed to providing all Malone students with educational opportunities designed to stimulate an increasing awareness and interest in music. Because much of the essence of a culture is reflected in its music we attempt to enhance cultural awareness through a variety of experiences in music. Study of music should cultivate an appreciation for music, encourage participation and employment in music, and provide opportunities for the development of the necessary skills for creation and evaluation of specific types of music. Experiences in music are available to both majors and non-majors as essential components of a liberal arts education. All students are encouraged to take courses in music as elective or supporting courses.

MUSIC PRODUCTION

The Music Production Suite at Malone University is made up of three major components. Our MIDI lab is shared with the art department and students have access to iMac and MacPro computers during library hours for graphic art design, film editing, music notation, digital audio, and production. It contains fourteen desks, ten of them with MIDI keyboard input. The second component is a 5.1 Surround editing suite used for post-production and mixing in both stereo and Surround, which is available to music production students through arrangement with the Fine Arts office. The third component is a hybrid studio (DAW/Analog) with control room, and main, drum and vocal recording isolation booths, with 26 hardwired lines, 8 returns, and 26 "wild" lines. It is large enough to contain a small chamber orchestra, rock band, or jazz combo. The console is  a SONY MX 56-channel analog board with Uptown automation. This is wired into a patchbay with multiple connections to additional preamp/AD converters, coordinated with two Atari HD24, a MOTU 2408 ADDA converter/interface and a Mac G5/MacPro (TBA), running Pro Tools and Logic Pro DAW and production softwares. It also contains (for the pure-at-heart) an Otari R-R 8-track, with Dolby noise reduction, multiple microphones (mostly C1000 and 4000 series), amplifiers, three stereo speaker systems, and multiple analog and digital outboard gear for effects and processing.
