Master of Arts in Education

Since 1958, Malone University, known for its comprehensive curriculum and experiential learning components, has prepared students for the teaching profession. The Master of Arts in Education (M.A.Ed.): Teacher Education Program offers several areas of concentration that can lead to new opportunities for your career.

Areas of Concentration

Classroom Guidance
This core empowers teachers to help their students by: enhancing student-centered problem solving skills; becoming more effective in dealing with the diverse needs of their students; and becoming more knowledgeable in the areas of behavioral, academic, emotional, and cultural concerns as they impact the classroom. (36 hours)

Curriculum and Instruction
This core strengthens teachers’ classroom instructional skills and knowledge. The program is flexible, allowing students to tailor course work to their needs and emphasizing contemporary educational issues. (36 hours)

Curriculum, Instruction, and Professional Development
This core prepares teachers for the Administrative Specialist license and equips administrators with the knowledge and leadership skills to help other teachers transform their classroom experiences. (36 hours)

Intervention Specialist
This core prepares teachers to earn the Intervention Specialist license, valid for teaching students with mild/moderate educational needs. (38 hours)

Reading
This core prepares teachers to earn the Ohio endorsement in Reading. Course work emphasizes whole language, children’s literature, and assessment and intervention of reading problems. (36 hours)

School Counseling
This program, approved by the Ohio Department of Education, will prepare you to take the specialty examination for School Counseling to become a licensed, professional school counselor. Initial teacher licensure is not required for admission. (48 hours)

Program Features

Malone’s program is designed to fit conveniently into your busy personal and professional schedule. You will take one session a week or on Saturdays; completing your degree by focusing on one class at a time, with each class running six or eight weeks in length.

Malone University has been approved by the Ohio Department of Education to offer licensure in the areas listed below.

  • Administrative Specialist License
  • Intervention Specialist: Mild/Moderate License
  • Reading Endorsement
  • School Counseling

Admission Requirements

Regular Admission

  • Hold a baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution with a minimum cumulative g.p.a. of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
  • Have or have had a valid teaching license (Not needed for School Counseling-other admission criteria also apply. See Graduate Counselor Education).


Conditional Admission

Applicants with a minimum cumulative g.p.a. of 2.5 – 2.99 must submit a score of 175 or higher on the Praxis Writing Examination, in addition to the Regular Admission materials (For School Counseling other admission criteria also apply. See Graduate Counselor Education).

Financial Aid

The Federal Stafford Loan (Subsidized or Unsubsidized) is available to students who need financial assistance. To qualify for a student loan the graduate students must:

  1. Be degree-seeking or pursuing teacher certification at Malone University.
  2. Be enrolled at least half-time, which translates to a minimum of five credit hours.
  3. Demonstrate financial need (for subsidized loan only).
  4. Not be in default on a former loan or owe a refund on a federal grant.
  5. Complete the FAFSA online at www.fafsa.ed.gov (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) and the Malone Financial Aid Application and submit to Malone's Financial Aid Office by the first day of the month before the semester begins (April 1 for Summer, August 1 for Fall, December 1 for Spring). Our Title IV school code is 003072.
  6. Holders of previous federal student loans must be enrolled at least halftime to be eligible for deferment. NOTE: One fourth of tuition is payable at registration if financial aid documents are not received in a timely manner.

Reimbursement will be made if the loan is fully disbursed and there is available credit.

Notice: The University will not release transcripts, diplomas or teaching licenses until all accounts are settled. All charges must be paid in full before graduation. All accounts must be paid in full before enrollment in another semester is permitted. Interest may be charged on any unpaid balance. The university reserves the right to use collection agencies and/or take appropriate legal action to collect any unpaid tuition and fees owed to the college. All associated collection costs will be the responsibility of the student.
