I am married to David, a certified financial planner, and we live in Canton with two cats. I enjoy working in our flower beds, reading, crocheting, and knitting. Recently I began creating art with stained glass, and my husband is teaching me how to play tennis.

As a professor of education I believe it is important to model best practices for the teaching profession. I provide examples of varied teaching strategies and use creative lessons and forms of evaluation, including performance-based assessment, to encourage candidates to do the same when they become teachers. In my view, those who prepare future teachers have an obligation that extends beyond the college student sitting in our classes. Our obligation includes the future students who will be taught by the teachers we prepare. In his or her teaching career one of our graduates will have the opportunity to touch the lives of thousands of students. It is imperative that we prepare teachers who will have a positive effect on the lives of the students they teach.

I believe every student has the potential to bring something unique and special to the world. To meet one’s fullest potential one must be provided with an environment that is safe, supports risk-taking, and invites a sharing of ideas. For students to construct knowledge, they need the opportunity to discover and practice skills in authentic situations. Equally important to self-discovery is having the opportunity to study things that are meaningful and relevant to one's life and interests and here at Malone University, by means of a Christian viewpoint. By instilling a love for learning, educators will assist in their students becoming successful and fulfilled in life.
My teaching style is varied…I like to mix it up with some lecture, large and small group discussions, projects, presentations, pair and share, and many other strategies.

I am from the Chicago area and have lived in Ohio for the past ten years teaching at MU. I have a passion for reading, and human rights and justice issues. I love every course I teach, but Children’s and YA literature, Social and Cultural Diversity, and the Holocaust each have a special place in my heart. In my spare time I read, a lot! There are several mixed-media creations in various stages of completion in my studio. Right now my work is autobiographical, or Holocaust related. In addition, I’m working on my own book of Psalms, and have about 25 written. I have been on two medical missions trips to South Sudan, and hope to make many such trips throughout the rest of my life. I enjoy walking in the woods, various cultural events, and spending time with my kids.

I love taking care of our five grandchildren while their parents pursue their careers. My husband and I have been involved with these young ones for the past 13 years. These have rewarding years for us both as we have watched our grandchildren mature and develop into loving and caring children. I also enjoy fishing, boating, taking walks, gardening and cooking.

My husband, Paul, and I have been married for 46 years. We have had a wonderful marriage. Paul has been involved in education for the past 49 years. Our daughter, Karla, works as a legal secretary at Buckingham Doolittle Law Firm. Our son, Brian works as the choir director at Glen Oak High School and The Chapel in North Canton. Since our children and their families live in the nearby vicinity, it has made it possible to have many enjoyable family get-togethers.

In the summer months we have enjoyed vacationing. Two of our favorite spots are Myrtle Beach and Lake Keuka in New York State. We have tried our hand at fishing and have netted some nice sized chain pickerel.

We have been active in The Green Chapel where I have led the singing for our adult Bible fellowship. Visiting shut-ins and serving in the church kitchen have also been rewarding. Being a part of the baptismal committee has given me the opportunity to share my faith in Jesus Christ with others.

Another one of my passions is supervising student teachers for Malone University. I have especially enjoyed this endeavor since it has kept me involved with students and the challenges that go along with being a good teacher.

I am intentional in modeling what I teach. School Counselors are people who are advocates, activists, risk takers, and skilled, assertive leaders. School Counselors must utilize their skills and training toward eliminating environmental obstacles to social justice; academic obstacles to student learning and progress; and helping students cope or learn to deal with emotional stressors which impede their ability to grow and thrive. We (school counselors) proactively work for the betterment of the lives of students, parents, administrators and their communities in hopes that the positive changes will have a desirable effect on the world.
I engage my candidates in their learning. I used multi-modal approaches during every class session to present and reinforce understanding and application of concepts, theories, techniques and leadership.

I retired with 35 years of teaching and/or school counseling in the public schools. I had the tremendous opportunity to teach four different grades and then be a school counselor at each level – elementary, middle and high school. Those experiences have proven invaluable to my teaching at Malone University. Upon completing my doctorate, I had always planned to teach at the collegiate level, I am very thankful that God had the same plan.
My husband, a retired police officer and mayor of Orrville, and I are the proud parents of four adult children. We also have seven granddaughters and one grandson. My hobbies include
many family-oriented activities, reading, writing, cooking, exercising, traveling and visiting nursing homes with my therapy dog, Gilbert.
