Series:       

The Cavaliers lead the all-time series between the two schools 8-6 although the Pioneers have won each of the last three meetings, including a 24-21 victory last season.  The winner of the annual rivalry contest receives the rotating Dick Gallagher Memorial Trophy, named in honor of the late and former Executive Director of the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

 

Coaches:  

Malone Mike Gardner is in his fourth season at Malone and has directed the Pioneers to a 23-16 record, including a 2-4 mark this year.  Gardner has compiled a 43-19 career record including a 20-3 mark in two seasons at Tabor (KS) College.

WalshJim Dennison is in his 15th season at Walsh and has guided the Cavaliers to 101-58 mark, including a 5-2 record in 2009.  Overall, Dennison has compiled a 181-120-2 record in 28 seasons of coaching college football.

Malone Notes – The Pioneers lost on the road to NAIA #8 Saint Xavier (IL) University this past Saturday by a final score of 66-31…The host Cougars pulled away in the early going of the contest by scoring a school-record 42 first-quarter points…Malone currently ranks third in the 16-team MSFA (17th overall in the NAIA) in total offense with an average of 402.5 yards per game…The Pioneer defense ranks second in the conference (12th in the NAIA) in opponent first downs, having allowed just 95 through its first six games.

Malone players to watch:  Redshirt freshman QB Steve Brohl has completed 98 of 191 pass attempts (51.3%) for 1070 yards with 10 touchdowns and seven interceptions…RB Joe Peters has gained 559 rushing yards on just 51 attempts (6.9 average), caught nine passes for 104 yards, returned nine kickoffs for 240 yards (26.7 average), gained 77 yards on 11 punt returns and scored four TD’s…With these impressive numbers, Peters currently ranks third in the MSFA (11th in the NAIA) with an average of 163.3 all-purpose yards per game and fourth in the conference in rushing (17th in the NAIA) at 93.2 yards per game …Fellow RB Markus McFolling has also made quite an impact this season, having gained 512 rushing yards on 87 attempts (5.9 average) to go with 12 pass receptions for 129 yards and five TD’s (four rushing, one receiving)…WR Jeff Perri has caught a team-high 23 passes this season for 210 yards and three touchdowns…WR Derrick McLean has pulled in 21 catches for 209 yards and two scores through the Pioneers’ first six contests …DL Cody Carroll has racked up 35 total tackles this year, including 13 tackles for loss and seven sacks…Carroll’s averages of 2.2 tackles for loss and1.2 sacks per contest each rank second in the NAIA…LB K.P. Fonseca has registered a team-high 42 total tackles with 2.5 tackles for loss, a forced fumble and a blocked kick… DB Jon Latimer follows with 37 total tackles, including 1.5 tackles for loss, two interceptions and two fumble recoveries…Punter Mike Skvor ranks second in the MSFA (seventh in the NAIA) with an average of 41.4 yards per punt.

Walsh Notes – The Cavaliers, ranked 20th in the most recent NAIA National Poll, tallied a 31-12 victory at Taylor (IN) University this past Saturday…Walsh held a slim 14-12 lead at halftime of Saturday’s contest but then registered 17 unanswered points in the second half to pull away for the victory…The Cavaliers rank third in the MSFA (sixth overall in the NAIA) with an average of 230 rushing yards per game…Walsh’s kickoff return average of 23.2 yards leads the MSFA and ranks 13th overall in the NAIA.

Walsh players to watch: RB Clinton Blossomgame has gained 1164 rushing yards on 213 attempts (5.5 average) to go with six pass receptions for 44 yards and 14 TD’s (13 rushing, one receiving)…Blossomgame currently leads the NAIA in total rushing yards while ranking second in both average rushing yards per game (166.3) and total scoring (84 points)… QB Jim Shiplett has completed 66 of 143 passing attempts (46.2%) for 1017 yards with six touchdowns and six interceptions…WR Joe Morgan has tallied a team-best 34 pass receptions for 612 yards and three TD’s…Morgan currently ranks third in the MSFA with an average of 87.4 receiving yards per contest…DB Brian Williams leads the conference (ranks 19th in the NAIA) in kickoff return average at 25.9 yards per attempt (returned 14 kickoffs for a total of 363 yards)…Williams has also made significant contributions in the defensive backfield, having totaled 33 tackles with 3.0 tackles for loss, one interception, four pass break-ups, two forced fumbles and two blocked kicks…LB Jason Stiel has registered a team-high 52 total tackles, including 4.0 tackles for loss with two sacks one forced fumble and one fumble recovery…DB Pat Kane has picked off three passes this season to go with 34 total tackles, one sack, one forced fumble and five pass break-ups…DB Mike Welce has forced three fumbles and posted a team-high seven sacks.
