Men’s Golf Team Wins Its Own Fall Classic; Ben Smith Earns Medalist HonorsThe Malone men’s golf team opened its fall 2009 season by
winning its own Malone Fall Classic among an eight-team field at the Tannenhauf
Golf Course in Alliance, Ohio last Friday and Saturday. Malone tallied an impressive two-day winning
score of 575 (288-287), which was one-under-par for the event. Madonna (MI) University was second at 591
(301-290), Notre Dame (OH) College took third at 599 (301-298), Huntington (IN)
University placed fourth at 604 (302-302) and the University of Northwestern
Ohio rounded out the top five at 614 (310-304). |

Men’s Golf Captures Cleveland State University Invitational; Justin Lower Earns Medalist Honors
For the first time in Malone men’s golf history, the Pioneers have captured a
team title at an NCAA Div. I intercollegiate event. Malone accomplished the feat by capturing the
NCAA Div. I Cleveland State University Invitational Monday and Tuesday among a
12-team field.

Malone Men's Golf (B Team) Captures Westminster InvitationalThe Malone University men’s golf team (B team) captured the nine-team Westminster (PA) College Invitational last Monday with a score of 314. Grove City (PA) College took second at 324, Westminster was third at 333, Edinboro (PA) University placed fourth at 341 and St. Vincent (PA) College rounded out the top five at 342. Michael Strayer (Sr., Riverside H.S.) led the team with a round of 73 (37-36) and easily won the tournament by three strokes over several others who shot 76. Steve Robison (Jr., Jackson H.S.) followed for Malone with a 79. Kyle Sine (Jr., Shawnee H.S.) posted an 80, Ryan Gaughan (Jr., Lake H.S.) carded an 82 and Jay Hollifield (Fr., Louisville H.S.) fired an 85. |

Men’s Golf (B Team) Finishes Runner-Up At Red Poling ClassicThe Malone University men’s golf team (B team) competed at the Red Poling Collegiate Classic, hosted by Spring Arbor (MI) University, last Tuesday and finished in a tie for second at the six-team event. The Pioneers tallied a score of 312 and fell just one stroke shy of Hope (MI) College, which won the event with a 311. Calvin (MI) College also posted a 312 to tie Malone for second place. Spring Arbor took fourth place with a 313, Monmouth (IL) College finished fifth at 324 and Augustana (IL) College rounded out the team placements in sixth at 325. Jay Hollifield (Fr., Louisville H.S.) paced the squad with a round of 76 and finished in a tie for fourth overall. Steve Robison (Jr., Jackson H.S.) followed with a 77, Ryan Gaughan (Jr., Lake H.S.) fired a 79, Michael Strayer (Sr., Riverside H.S.) shot an 80 and Kyle Sine (Jr., Shawnee H.S.) carded an 81.

Men’s Golf Team Shoots School-Record 280; Wins Phipps MemorialThe Malone University men’s golf team shot a school-record eight-under-par 280
to capture the annual Phipps Memorial Tournament, at Glenmoor Country Club, among
a three-team field on Thursday. Malone
has posted a few seven-under-par team scores of 281 throughout its 45+ year
history but Thursday’s score of 280 broke the record. |

Malone Finishes Runner-Up At NCCAA National Championships
The Malone University men’s golf team, led by head
coach Ken Hyland, finished as the national runners-up among an 18-team field at
the NCCAA National Championships in Panama City, Florida Monday and
Tuesday. Malone finished with a two-day
score of 892 (293-297-302) as Dallas Baptist University won the team title with
a score of 880. Colorado Christian
University took third at 901, Southeastern (FL) University placed fourth at 907
and North Greenville (SC) University rounded out the top five at the event at
910. |

Men’s Golf Finishes Fourth At Dayton Invitational; Justin Lower Wins Second-Ever Div. I Medalist Honors For MaloneThe Malone University men’s golf team finished fourth among a 17-team field at the NCAA Div. I University of Dayton Invitational last Monday and Tuesday. In addition, junior Justin Lower (Northwest H.S.), earned his second overall medalist honor at an NCAA Div. I tournament by winning the Dayton event this week. Lower is the only Pioneer men’s golfer in the 45+ year history of the program to have accomplished the feat as he also won the NCAA Div. I Cleveland State University Invitational earlier this fall. Malone tallied a two-day score of 606 (312-294) for its fourth-place finish as Ball State University took the team title at 596 (305-291). The University of Toledo finished second at 601 (298-303), Bowling Green State University was third at 604 (309-295) and Ohio University rounded out the top five at 608 (309-299).Lower tallied an even-par score of 142 (73-69) for his first-place finish while Tyler Light (Fr., Perry H.S.) was next for Malone, and in 10th overall, with a score of 150 (80-70). Michael Strayer (Sr., Riverside H.S.) posted a score of 154 (80-74), Ben Smith fired a 160 (79-81) and Quinn Parker (Jr., Canton Central Catholic H.S.) carded a 163 (81-82). Malone’s fall campaign is now complete and the Pioneers will open their spring schedule in March.
