Head Coach - Chris Carmichael

Office: 330-471-8175

E-Mail:

Dr. Chris Carmichael enters his second season as the head coach of the Malone University men’s soccer team in 2010.  Despite a number of new faces on the roster and a transition to a new style of play, Carmichael was able to guide the Pioneers to a 5-12-1 overall record in his first year at the helm of the program, a two-win improvement over the squad’s 2008 mark of 3-14-1.

Carmichael, who also serves as a professor in Malone’s Department of Natural Sciences, played intercollegiate soccer for Eastern Illinois University as an outside midfielder and defender.  He has over 15 years of coaching experience, having worked with numerous club and high school teams.  In addition, Carmichael also runs technical training sessions for high school players and was previously a technical trainer for members of the University of West Florida’s men’s soccer team.  As a coach, he has successfully completed the USSF (United States Soccer Federation) E and D licenses and holds NSCAA Regional and Advanced Regional Diplomas, as well as, a Level 7 and 8 soccer referee license.

"It is a great privilege and honor to be selected to head the men's soccer program,” said Carmichael upon being hired prior to the 2009 season.  “I look forward to being a part of the process that will help build a winning tradition at Malone and to see our men's character and spiritual maturity increased.  We have a great group of very coachable and talented young men that are ready and eager to kickstart the fall 2009 season."

Grimes was as equally excited to have Carmichael join the Pioneer coaching staff.  “Chris Carmichael is a dynamic and high energy individual,” commented Grimes.  “We are thrilled to have him take on coaching our team, and bringing his positive attitude and tireless work ethic to our Athletics department.”

Lucas Martorana - Assistant Coach

Lucas Martorana returns for his third year on the Malone men's soccer coaching staff this fall.  After competing for the University of Buffalo at the NCAA Division I level for three years, Lucas transferred to Malone where he wrapped up his collegiate playing career by serving as a team captain for the Pioneers in 2007.  He has experience coaching all levels from youth through college, holds an NSCAA Advanced Regional Coaching Diploma and has plans on achieving his National Diploma within the next year.  While Lucas admits he is always learning more about the beautiful game, his coaching emphasis focuses on high technical standard, disciplined work ethic and individual and team growth both on and off the field.

A native of Warren, Ohio and a graduate of Howland High School, Lucas earned his undergraduate degree in Mathematics from Malone and is currently pursuing his master’s of education degree in school counseling.  He is highly active in his church, teaching Sunday school lessons, organizing youth events, and attending national conferences.  In addition to his church, school and soccer commitments, Lucas also oversees the Youth Development initiative for Stark Multi-Development Services (MDS), a non-profit organization in downtown Canton.

Although his collegiate playing days are over, Lucas continues to participate in amateur leagues and, most recently, competed as a midfielder and defender for the Ohio Vortex, Canton’s new professional indoor soccer team, during its inaugural season.  His other athletic pursuits include running half and full marathons, skateboarding and snowboarding.
