Malone Falls 6-0 To John Carroll In Season Opener
The Malone University men’s soccer team, under the direction of first-year head coach Chris Carmichael, kicked off its 2009 season on Tuesday evening with a 6-0 loss on the road to NCAA Division III John Carroll University. Three quick goals over a roughly 10-minute span by Blue Streak forward Jeff Kosek gave John Carroll a commanding 3-0 lead midway through the opening stanza. The hosts added another score just before intermission and then put the contest out of reach by netting two more goals in the second half. In a match that marked the season opener for both teams, the Pioneers were held to four shots compared to 18 for John Carroll. Malone will look to rebound from the tough defeat this weekend as it hosts the Comfort Inn-Subway Challenge. The Pioneers will open the event on Friday with a 4:00 p.m. contest against Concordia (MI) University before facing off with Aquinas (MI) College on Saturday at 4:00 p.m.

Pioneers Play To 0-0 Stalemate In Home Opener Against ConcordiaThe Malone University men’s soccer team played to 0-0 double-overtime tie on Friday afternoon in its home opener against Concordia (MI) University. The contest was the first of two matches that the Pioneers will participate in this weekend as part of the Canton Comfort Inn/Subway Challenge that is being co-hosted by Malone and Walsh Universities. Malone’s overall record moved to 0-1-1 following Friday’s action while Concordia’s record now stands at 1-0-1. Although the squads combined for a total of 12 shots on goal, none of the attempts managed to find the back of the net over 90 minutes of regulation and two 10-minute overtime periods. Malone keeper Warden Neuenschwander (Jr., Linden, VA) made seven saves while his counterpart, Concordia goalkeeper Kyle Winningham, stopped all five shots that he faced. Malone will return to action on Saturday afternoon as it hosts Aquinas (MI) College in another 4:00 p.m. contest. |

Aquinas Tops Malone 4-0 On Day Two Of Canton Comfort Inn/Subway ChallengeThe Malone University men’s soccer team fell 4-0 to visiting Aquinas (MI) College Saturday afternoon on the second and final day of the Canton Comfort Inn/Subway Challenge, an event that was co-hosted over the weekend by Malone and Walsh Universities. The Saints took command in the early going of the match as all four of their goals came in the first half of play. The Pioneers’ overall record dropped to 0-2-1 following Saturday’s action while Aquinas picked up its second victory of the weekend, improving to 2-1 on the young season. Aquinas forward Jeovani Pantoja scored in the seventh and 19th minutes to give the Saints an early 2-0 advantage. Fellow forward Brian Himes then added two more quick scores in the 29th and 34th minutes to put the contest out of reach. The Saints held a 9-4 advantage in total shots on goal as Malone keeper Warden Neuenschwander (Jr., Linden, VA) made five saves while Aquinas goalie Craig Demshuk stopped all four shots that he faced. The Pioneers will look to bounce back from the tough defeat on Wednesday (Sept. 9th) when they travel to the College of Wooster for a 5:00 p.m. match.

Pioneers Drop 4-1 Decision At College of Wooster
The Malone University men’s soccer team suffered a 4-1 defeat in a non-conference match Wednesday evening at the College of Wooster. The Fighting Scots, members of NCAA Division III, held a 2-0 advantage at intermission and then added goals in the 53rd and 74th minutes to build a commanding 4-0 lead. Pioneer junior forward Vinicius DaSilva Morais (Porto Alegre, Brazil) got Malone on the scoreboard with an unassisted goal in the 75th minute but it was not enough to overcome the sizable deficit as Wooster went on to register the 4-1 triumph. The Pioneers’ record dropped to 0-3-1 with the defeat while the Scots remained unbeaten on the young season, improving to 2-0-1. Wooster midfielder Karl Ruter tallied the Scots' first three goals of the evening, the last coming on a penalty kick, to record his first career hat trick. Each squad tallied seven shots on goal in the match as Pioneer keeper Warden Neuenschwander (Linden, VA) made three saves while Wooster netminders Taylor Takacs and Jordan O’Boyle combined to stop six shots. Malone will return to action on Saturday when it travels to NCAA Division II University of Charleston (WV) for a 1:00 p.m. match.

Sophomore midfielder Nic Ugrin (Pretoria, South Africa) scored an unassisted goal in the fifth minute of the match to give the Pioneers an early advantage. Malone then stretched its lead to 2-0 in the 22nd minute when sophomore defender Jordan Smith (St. Thomas Aquinas H.S.) headed in a cross from senior midfielder Ross Cochran (Paisley, Scotland). The Pioneers’ advantage grew to 4-0 early in the second half after the squad found the back of the net in both the 54th and 64th minutes of play. Freshman forward Samuel Erchick (Alliance H.S.) assisted fellow freshman forward Adam Sharpnack (Pittsburgh, PA) on the first score before Smith tallied his second goal of the match, this time off a corner kick from Ugrin. The host Bison answered back exactly two minutes later with a corner kick goal of their own but it was not enough as Sharpnack cemented the Malone win in the 88th minute after tapping in a rebound off a shot from freshman forward Alex Hall (Massillon Washington H.S.). Pioneers Blank Daemen, 3-0The Malone University men’s soccer team picked up its second straight American Mideast Conference victory on Saturday afternoon with a 3-0 triumph at Daemen (NY) College. A pair of first-half goals by freshman midfielder Philip Fisher (Lake H.S.) put the Pioneers on top 2-0 at intermission. Freshman forward Samual Erchick (Alliance H.S.) then pushed the lead to 3-0 in the early moments of the second stanza after tapping in the rebound from a shot by junior midfielder Lucas Correa (Campo Grande, Brazil). These three scores were more than enough for Malone keeper Warden Neuenschwander (Linden, VA) and the rest of the Pioneer defense as the visitors kept the Wildcats off the scoreboard over the remainder of the match. Malone improved to 4-5-1 overall and 2-1 in the AMC with the shutout win while Daemen dropped to 2-7 overall and 1-4 in the AMC. Fisher’s first goal came in the sixth minute as he knocked in the rebound off a shot by Erchick. Malone will return to American Mideast Conference play on Saturday at 3:00 p.m. as the squad hosts its final home match of the year against Cedarville University (8-3-3 overall, 3-0-2 AMC). Postseason Picture: The top five finishers in the final AMC regular season standings qualify for the conference’s postseason tournament. Finishers one, two and three receive first-round byes as the fourth and fifth place teams will square off in quarterfinal match on November 7th. The winner of the five-team tournament receives the AMC’s lone automatic bid to the NAIA National Tournament. Malone’s advantage then grew to 2-0 in the 52nd minute as freshman forward Adam Sharpnack (Pittsburgh, PA) netted his team-leading sixth goal of the year off a cross from freshman forward Samuel Erchick (Alliance H.S.). The Bears pulled to within 2-1 less than five minutes later and then tied the match on a header in the 72nd minute. However, Shawnee State was unable to take the lead and Fisher quickly answered back for Malone, putting the Pioneers in front for good after stealing the ball deep in the Bears’ zone and firing a shot into the net. Malone held a 7-5 advantage in total shots on goal as Pioneer keeper Warden Neuenschwander (Jr., Linden, VA) made three saves. Malone Notes: The Pioneers increased their win total by two matches in 2009 and will finish seventh out of ten teams in the final AMC regular-season standings…Sharpnack’s total of six goals on the season is the highest individual goal output for a Pioneer since 2006 when Alex Ferrandez, Rick King and Marcos Batchelor each notched six goals apiece.
