Malone Swimming & Diving Competes In First-Ever Meet Saturday At Ashland UniversityThe Malone University men’s and women’s swimming &
diving teams, led by head coach Monica Bragg, competed in the first-ever meet
for the two newest intercollegiate sports at Malone in a dual meet (men) and double dual meet (women) at Ashland University last Saturday. With this being the first-ever meet for the programs, the top Malone times in each race in which Malone competed are now considered school records, 19 total marks that the programs are counting on eclipsing in their second meet this Saturday at C.T. Branin Natatorium in Canton. For the men’s team, Erik Sjoberg (Fr., Hodgdon, ME) finished second in the 50-yard freestyle in 32.43 seconds while Kyle Shaffer (Fr., Buchtel H.S.) took third in the event in 41.82. In the 100-yard freestyle, Sjoberg took second again in 1:13.84 while Shaffer again placed third in 1:43.45. In addition, Jason Rook (Fr., New Philadelphia H.S.) placed second in the 200-yard freestyle in 2:15.66. In the 200-yard butterfly event, Mason Geib (Fr., Mass.
Washington H.S.) took second in 2:30.10 and, in the 200-yard individual medley,
he posted a time of 2:26.88, again for a second-place finish. In the 200-yard breaststroke, Michelle Wagner (Fr., Wadsworth H.S.) pocketed a time of 3:09.68 for sixth place while Catherine Kennedy (Fr., Wadsworth, OH) posted a seventh-place time of 3:24.80. In the 200-yard backstroke, Kennedy notched a time of 2:55.56 (ninth place). In the women’s 200-yard individual medley, Michelle Wagner (Fr., Wadsworth H.S.) finished in ninth in a time of 2:49.06 while Verel placed 10th in 3:02.52. In the 400-yard medley relay event, the team of Kennedy, Verel, Wagner and Carr posted a total time of 5:27.23. Kennedy swam the backstroke in 1:19.97, Verel clocked a 1:29.11 in the breaststroke, Wagner posted a 1:13.83 in the fly and Carr swam the freestyle in 1:23.95. The Malone men’s and women’s programs will next compete in a meet at the C.T. Branin Natatorium in Canton this Saturday at 1:00 p.m. This meet will be hosted by Lock Haven (PA) University, who will send its women’s team only to the event. The University of Findlay and Urbana University will also compete and will send both of their teams (men and women).

Malone Men's, Women's Swimming & Diving Each Collect First-Ever Win At Lock Haven Meet SaturdayThe Malone University men’s and women’s swimming & diving teams, in only their second-ever intercollegiate competition, each collected a victory in Saturday’s meet at the C.T. Branin Natatorium in Canton (meet hosted by Lock Haven University). On the men’s side, Malone defeated Urbana University 50-25, for its historic first-ever win, but lost to the University of Findlay by a relatively close 51-42 margin. In women’s scoring, Malone defeated Urbana 48-30 for their first win but lost to Lock Haven (PA) University 84-11 and to Findlay 92-15.For the men, Josh Cronin (Fr., McKinley H.S.0) finished third in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:59.94, just 2.06 seconds off the first-place time. In the 100-yard free, Chris Neal (Fr., Canton Central Catholic H.S.) finished third in 57.34 seconds while Erik Sjoberg (Fr., Hodgdon, MI) took fourth in 1:11.08. Kyle Shaffer (Fr., Buchtel H.S.) finished third in the 50-yard free in 38:52 while Mason Geib (Fr., Mass. Washington H.S.) took second in the 200-yard individual medley in 2:24.05. Geib also placed third in the 100-yard butterfly in 1:04.14. In the 100-yard backstroke event, Neal placed third (1:14.09) and Shaffer was fourth (1:48.13). Sjoberg, in the 100-yard breaststroke, finished fourth (1:24.49). In the men’s 400-yard freestyle relay, the team of Jason Rook (Fr., New Philadelphia H.S.), Shaffer, Sjoberg and Geib posted a time of 4:42.30. In the diving portion of the men’s meet, Rook finished first in the 1-meter with 112.10 points while Anthony McCartney (Fr., Minerva H.S.) placed second with 98.90 points. In the 3-meter event, Rook was first with 134.70 points and McCartney took second with 122.85 points. For the women, Jackie Sadler (So., Rochester, NY) finished fourth in the 50-yard freestyle in 26.53 seconds, just 1.44 seconds off the winning time. Sadler collected another fourth-place finish in the 100-yard free in a time of 58.95 seconds while Abby Carr (Fr., Oakdale, PA) finished eighth (1:32.67). In the 200 free, Catherine Kennedy (Fr., Wadsworth, OH) placed sixth in 2:34.93 while Courtney Verel (Fr., Aurora H.S.) took seventh in 2:38.94. Katrina Carosello (Fr., Tempe, AZ) finished sixth in 7:37.25 and, in the 1000-yard freestyle event, Verel finished fifth (no time available). In the 100-yard butterfly event, Michelle Wagner (Fr., Wadsworth H.S.) took fourth in 1:14.67 while, in the 200-yard individual medley, Kennedy clocked a time of 2:59.82 for fifth place. Carr placed sixth in the 100-yard backstroke in 1:46.66 while, in the 100-yard breaststroke, Wagner finished fifth in 1:26.95 and Katie Radnich (Fr., Meadville, PA) took sixth in 1:32.55. In the relay events, the women’s 400-yard medley relay team of Verel, Carr, Carosello and Radnich posted a time of 5:28.93 for third place. In the 400-yard freestyle relay, the team of Kennedy, Carosello, Wagner and Radnich placed fifth in a time of 4:40.07. The Malone women did not have anyone entered in the diving portion of the meet.

Swimming & Diving Teams Compete At Cleveland State Meet
The Malone men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams
competed at a Cleveland State University meet (hosted by Youngstown State
University) last Friday in the third meet of the inaugural Pioneer teams’
campaigns. On the women’s side, CSU
defeated Malone 194-24, YSU stopped the Pioneers 197-26 and Canisius (NY)
College Malone 170-35. In the men’s
meet, CSU beat Malone 169-42 while Canisius defeated the Pioneers 158-46. The men’s team had two individuals competing in the diving events. In the 1-meter event, Rook placed third with 163.70 points while Anthony McCartney (Fr., Minerva H.S.) finished fourth with 128.70 points. In the 3-meter competition, Rook placed third with a total of 142.35 points. |

up one victory in two head-to-head matchups while the women competed as well
but did not post a win. It was the men’s
second victory of the young season. The women

Malone Swimming & Diving Competes At John Carroll ClassicThe Malone University men’s and women’s swimming & diving teams competed at
the John Carroll University Carroll Swim Classic last Friday and Saturday. In the women’s meet, Malone finished third
out of four teams, with 243 points, as host John Carroll won the meet with 1078
points. Notre Dame College took second
with 1076 points and Ursuline College was fourth with 87. In the men’s meet, Malone was third among
three teams, with 220 points, as John Carroll won with 1177 points. Notre Dame was second with 755 points. Kennedy also competed in the 200-yard individual medley and posted a time of 2:54.21. Wagner, in the 400-yard IM, swam a time of 5:47.65. In women’s relay action, the Pioneers’ 200-yard freestyle
relay team of Pifher (26.77), Radnich (29.82), Wilthew (1:04.95) and Kuhn (18:93)
touched in with a time of 2:20.47. In
the 800-yard freestyle relay, the squad of Wagner (2:22.81), Verel (2:35.89),
Kennedy (2:32.04) and Kuhn (2:44.77) posted a time of 10:15.51. In men’s competition, Chris Neal (Fr., Canton Central Catholic H.S.) clocked a time of 25.81 seconds in the 50-yard freestyle event while Erik Sjoberg (Fr., Hodgdon, ME) was close behind in 29.62. Jason Rook (Fr., New Philadelphia H.S.), in the 100-yard freestyle, finished in a time of 55.83 while Luke Freckelton (Fr., Mannering Park, Australia) posted a time of 1:03.32. Freckelton also notched a time of 2:37.30 in the 200-yard freestyle event. In the 100-yard breaststroke, Sjoberg touched in at 1:23.70
and also posted a time of 3:05.40 in the 200-yard breaststroke. In the 200-yard butterfly event, Mason Geib
(Fr., Mass. Washington H.S.) finished in a time of 2:18.89. In men’s relay action, the Pioneers’ 200-yard freestyle
relay team of Geib (26.91), Sjoberg (29.59), Neal (26:18) and Rook (24.25)
clocked a time of 1:46.93. The Malone men’s and women’s teams’ next meet will be on Friday, January 15th at Hiram College.

Elishah Wilthew (Fr., Garrettsville, OH) was third in 37.93. In the 100 free, Katherine Radnich (Fr.,
Meadville, PA) took first in 1:17.85 while Kuhn was second in 1:19.09. Aubrie Hower (Fr., Ashland H.S.) finished
second in the 200-meter freestyle in 2:39.84 while Catherine Kennedy (Fr.,
Wadsworth, OH) took fourth in 2:47.17. In the 100-meter butterfly, Geib finished second in 1:09.95 while Neal took second in the 100-meter backstroke event in a time of 1:14.38. Sjoberg captured first place in the 100-meter breaststroke in a time of 1:32.39. In the men’s relay events, the Malone team of Neal, Sjoberg, Meeson and Geib won the 200-meter freestyle relay in a time of 2:01.33.

Swimming & Diving Teams Compete At Denison MeetThe Malone University men’s and women’s swimming & diving teams competed at a Denison University dual meet this past Friday. Both Pioneer teams were unable to post a win as Denison took the men’s meet 122-34 and also captured the women’s meet 115-56. In the women’s meet, Ashley Kuhn (Fr., North Royalton H.S.) finished fifth in the 50-yard freestyle event in 30.48 seconds while Elishah Wilthew (Fr., Garrettsville, OH) placed sixth in 37.61. In the 100 free, Kuhn was second (1:10.36) while Wilthew took third (1:24.27). Katie Radnich (Fr., Meadville, PA) finished third in the 200-yard free in 2:26.50 while Wilthew was fourth in 3:05.59. In the grueling 500-yard freestyle event, Michelle Wagner (Fr., Wadsworth H.S.) came in fourth (6:11.64) while Kuhn placed fifth (7:18.71).In the women’s 100-yard butterfly, Aubrie Hower (Fr., Ashland H.S.) took fourth in a time of 1:13.80 while Kennedy took fourth in the 100 backstroke in 1:21.23. In the 100-yard breaststroke, Radnich came in second in 1:24.51 and Kennedy placed third in 1:31.67. In the 200-yard individual medley event, Wagner grabbed a second-place finish in a time of 2:40.84 while Hower took third in 2:41.10. In the women’s relay events, the 200-yard medley relay team of Kennedy, Radnich, Hower and Wagner won the event in a time of 2:16.87 while the 200 freestyle relay unit of Radnich, Wagner, Kuhn and Hower also captured first in a time of 2:01.11. In the men’s meet, Casey Meeson (Fr., Lakewood H.S.) placed fourth in a time of 24.18 seconds while Chris Neal (Fr., Canton Central Catholic H.S.) took fifth in 25.96. Neal also took second in the 100-yard free event in 56.45 seconds. In the 200 free, Erik Sjoberg (Fr., Hodgdon, ME) placed second in 2:31.46 and in the lengthy 500-yard freestyle race, Meeson was fourth in 5:29.39. Mason Geib (Fr., Massillon Wash. H.S.) finished second in the 100-yard backstroke in a time of 1:08.19 while Sjoberg took fourth in the 100 breaststroke in 1:19.85. In the 200-yard individual medley, Geib placed fourth in a time of 2:22.05. In the men’s relay events, the 200-yard medley relay team of Neal, Sjoberg, Geib and Meeson finished third in a time of 1:57.03. Women’s Swimming & Diving Team Finishes Second Among 14 Teams At Kenyon Meet; Women’s 200-Yard Freestyle Relay Team And Wagner in 1650 Freestyle Qualify For NAIA NationalsThe Malone University women’s swimming & diving team posted the best meet of their inaugural season last Saturday by finishing an impressive second among a 14-team field at the Kenyon College Invitational while the Pioneer men’s team finished 10th among a 15-team men’s field.The women tallied 247 points as Denison University won the women’ s team title with 441 points. SUNY-Geneseo was third with 243, Wittenberg University took fourth at 208 and Kenyon rounded out the top five with 139. For the men, Denison also won the men’s team title with 443.5 points, SUNY-Geneseo was second at 262, Kenyon placed third at 181.5, Wittenberg came in fourth at 179.5 and Ashland University rounded out the top five at 130. The most exciting part of the women’s meet for Malone was when the Pioneers’ 200-yard freestyle relay unit of Aubrie Hower (Fr., Ashland H.S.), Ashley Kuhn (Fr., North Royalton H.S.), Katie Radnich (Fr., Meadville, PA) and Michelle Wagner (Fr., Wadsworth H.S.) posted an NAIA national qualifying time of 1:54.59. They will compete at the NAIA National Championships in St. Charles, Missouri March 3-6. In addition, Wagner also qualified for NAIA nationals in the grueling 1650-yard freestyle event as she posted a time of 20:18.43. She also placed seventh in the 500-yard freestyle in a time of 6:09.33. Kuhn paced the women in the 50-yard free with a time of 28.98 seconds while Wagner was tops for the team in the 100-yard free at 1:05.78. In the 200 freestyle event, Kuhn posted a time of 2:30.84. In the women’s 100-yard butterfly, Hower collected a time of 1:12.72 and also posted a time of 2:40.30 in the 200-yard butterfly. In the 100 breaststroke, Radnich clocked a time of 1:21.28 and also notched a time of 2:59.40 in the 200 breast. Kuhn posted a 1:17.32 in the 100-yard backstroke while Radnich led the team in the 200 back in a time of 2:37.21. In the 200-yard individual medley, Hower paced the squad with a fourth-place finish in 2:36.41. In the women’s relay events, the 200-yard medley relay team of Catherine Kennedy (Fr., Wadsworth, OH), Radnich, Hower and Wagner swam a time of 2:12.09. In addition, the 400-yard freestyle relay unit of Kuhn, Kennedy, Radnich and Wagner posted a time of 4:26.42. For the men’s team, Chris Neal (Fr., Canton Central Catholic H.S.) led the way for the squad in the 50-yard freestyle in a time of 24.97 seconds. In the 100-yard butterfly, Mason Geib (Fr., Massillon Wash. H.S.) clocked a 59.74 seconds and also collected a time of 2:15.09 in the 200 fly event. Erik Sjoberg (Fr., Hodgdon, ME) swam a time of 1:19.21 in the 100-yard breaststroke event and also pocketed a time of 2:51.35 in the 200 breast. Women's 200 Yard Freestyle Relay Breaks School Record At NAIA Nationals; Wagner Competes In 1650 FreeThe Malone University women's swimming & diving 200 yard freestyle relay unit of Aubrey Hower (Fr., Ashland H.S.), Ashley Kuhn (Fr., North Royalton H.S.), Katie Radnich (Fr., Meadville, PA) and Michelle Wagner (Fr., Wadsworth H.S.) competed in the preliminaries of the event on Friday at the NAIA National Championships in St. Charles, Missouri (hosted by Lindenwood University) after qualifying for the national meet with a time of 1:54.59 at the Kenyon College Invitational on February 20th. Although the team did not qualify for the finals of the event at the national meet, the squad did break its own school record by nearly half a second by posting a time of 1:54.17. |
