Pioneer women’s team finished tied for 10th among 19 teams at the
meet while the Malone men’s squad placed 13th among 20 teams. The teams’ placements would have been higher
had it not been for the fact that a number of Malone athletes who were
scheduled to compete, and travel, on Saturday did not make the trip due to the
weather.

Men’s Track & Field Team Places Fifth At NAIA Indoor Nationals; Three Men Earn Four All-America HonorsAlthough the Malone University men’s track & field team sent just eight
athletes to the NAIA Indoor National Championships in Johnson City, Tennessee
March 4-6, these individuals were able to post an impressive fifth-place
national finish among 48 men’s teams which scored points. In addition, four Pioneer men’s athletes
claimed NAIA All-America honors. The Pioneer men posted 27 total points for
their fifth-place finish as Azusa Pacific (CA) University captured the men’s
team title with 71 points.

Outdoor Track & Field Teams Compete at Wake Forest University OpenThe Malone University men’s and women’s outdoor track & field teams competed at the Wake Forest (NC) University Open on March 19-20 as five Pioneers qualified for the NAIA outdoor national meet. For the men’s team, Chris Sinick (Sr., Field H.S.) posted a third-place finish in the 1500-meter run, qualifying for NAIA nationals with a time of 3:53.51. Jeb Ford (Sr., Minerva H.S.) also qualified for nationals with his 10th-place time of 48.53 in the 400-meter run. Evan Gaynor (Jr., Delta H.S.) and James Zeuch (Jr., Galion H.S.) both qualified for nationals with their performances in the 10000 meters, placing fourth and sixth, respectively, with times of 30:55.83 and 30:59.74. Other performances at the meet for the men’s team included Tony Migliozzi’s (So., St. Thomas Aquinas H.S.) time of 31:51.34 (13th place) in the 10000-meter run, Jason Rook’s (So., New Philadelphia H.S.) height of 14’ 11” in the pole vault (12th place), and Johnnie Legrair’s (So., Copley H.S.) distance of 20’ 8” in the long jump (27th place). In addition, Legrair competed in the 100 meters and posted a prelim time of 11.40 seconds and also ran the 110-meter hurdles, recording a prelim time of 15.45 seconds. For the women’s team, Sarah Hines (Sr., Northmor H.S.) qualified for the NAIA outdoor nationals with her sixth-place finish in the 5000-meter run with a time of 17:52.47. Also competing at the meet for the women’s team was Tynae Wilson’s (So., Fort Wayne, IN) who posted a time of 10:38.68 (12th place) in the 3000-meter run.

Track & Field Teams Host Third Annual Jack Hazen OpenOn a day that longtime cross country head coach Jack Hazen turned 70 years
of age, the third annual Jack Hazen Open was held on Malone’s campus on
Saturday as eight other teams competed with Malone in the non-scoring meet. Those who captured third-place finishes for the women were Becky Neitzel (So., Malvern H.S.) in the 1500 meters (4:59.59), Megan Miller (Jr., Crestwood H.S.) in the 400 meters (1:03.78), Sharp in the 800 meters (2:25.87), Erin Bauer (So., Loveland H.S.) in the 3000 meters (10:51.03), Kaufman in the shot put (11.52 meters), Ickes in the discus (37.10 meters) and Molly Hanzie (Fr., Norwayne H.S.) in the javelin (33.11 meters). For the
Pioneer men’s team, five individuals or relay teams earned victories in events
including Chris Sinick (Sr., Field H.S.) in the 800 meters (1:58.05), Garrett
Oliver (Sr., Benjamin Logan H.S.) in the 400-meter hurdles (56.04), Jordan
Francis (So., Troy Christian H.S.) in the shot put (14.28 meters) and Jason
Rook (So., New Philadelphia H.S.) in the pole vault (4.57 meters). In addition, the men’s 4x400-meter relay unit
of Oliver, Bryan Krieger (Sr., Cuyahoga Falls H.S.), Sinick and Daniel
Bridenstine (Fr., Jackson H.S.) won in a time of 3:29.30. Third-place finishers for Malone included Bridenstine in the 400-meter hurdles (59.45 seconds), Aaron Melhorn (Jr., Fairless H.S.) in the 3000 meters (8:42.40) and Paul Henderson (Jr., Western Reserve H.S.) in the hammer throw (37.27 meters).

Men’s And Women’s Track & Field Teams Post First-Place Finishes At Mt. Union InvitationalThe Malone University men’s and women’s outdoor track & field teams captured victories at the Mt. Union College Invitational last Saturday as the men’s team took first among a 10-team field while the women’s squad placed first among an 11-team field. The men’s team tallied 136.50 points while Mt. Union was second at 119. John Carroll University took third at 106,
Buffalo State College was fourth at 105 and Ohio Northern University rounded
out the top five at 77.50. Jason Rook (So., New Philadelphia H.S.) took first place in the pole vault at 15’ 1.5”. Rook also competed at the Sea Ray Relays in Knoxville, Tennessee (University of Tennessee) on Friday and finished with an excellent mark of 15’ 7”. Chris Sinick (Sr., Field H.S.) posted an event victory for the Pioneer men’s team as he won the 800 meters in a time of 1:53.92 while Anthony Lombardi (Fr., Tuslaw H.S.) also captured a first-place finish, winning the high jump with a leap of 6’ 6”. Other strong
performances for the men included Caleb Celuch (So., New Philadelphia H.S.) in
the javelin (2nd; 165’ 9”), Johnnie Legrair (So., Copley H.S.) in
the 110-meter hurdles (2nd; 15.41), Garrett Oliver (Sr., Benjamin
Logan H.S.) in the 400-meter hurdles (2nd; 54.95) and the men’s
4x400 relay team of Daniel Bridenstine (Fr., Jackson H.S.), Oliver, Sinick and
Kyle Wagner (Fr., Green H.S.) which posted a third-place time of 3:22.29. For the Malone women, Erin Bauer (So., Loveland H.S.) won the 1500 meters in a time of 4:51.66 while Caitlin Sharp (So., East Canton H.S.) was right behind in second in 4:53.52. Melissa Wohlheter (Fr., Tuslaw H.S.) captured the 400-meter hurdles in a time of 1:07.16 while Hannah Hartzler (Fr., Norwayne H.S.) took the 5000 meters in 18:37.05 with Gabrielle Wuensch (Jr., New London H.S.) right behind in second in 18:39.35. Ashton Avery (So., Canton McKinley H.S.) pocketed the 800 meters in a time of 2:17.85 to lead a 1-2-3-4 finish in the event as Kayleigh Bildstein (Jr., Madison H.S.) placed second (2:20.17), Becky Neitzel (So., Malvern H.S.) took third (2:20.58) and Megan Miller (Jr., Crestwood H.S.) finished fourth (2:23.86). Lori Ickes (Jr., Smithville H.S.) earned a second-place finish in the javelin with a throw of 112’ 2.50”. Men’s And Women’s Track & Field Teams Both Capture AMC Titles
The Malone University men’s and women’s track & field teams each captured
the team titles at the American Mideast Conference Championships, at Walsh
University, last Friday and Saturday.
The men won amongst a six-team field while the women were victorious
among a seven-team field. The sweep by
the Malone teams marks the fourth time that Malone has captured both the men’s
and women’s AMC team titles in the same
year (1999, 2000, 2002 were the others).
In addition, Malone head coach Mark McClure was named the AMC Men’s and
Women’s Coach of the Year. Numerous Malone student-athletes on the both sides earned
top-three finishes at the meet. Event
winners for the Malone men included Chris Sinick (Sr., Field H.S.) in the 1500
meters in 4:08.37 and the 800 meters in 1:56.07, Jason Rook (So., New
Philadelphia H.S.) in the pole vault at 14’ .5”, Steven Young (Jr., Gladstone,
MO) in the triple jump at 44’ 3.25”, Evan Gaynor (Jr., Delta H.S.) in the 5000
meters in 15:05.42, Jeb Ford (Sr., Minerva H.S.) in the 400 meters in 49.24,
Aaron Melhorn (Jr., Fairless H.S.) in the 3000-meter steeplechase in 9:23.80,
Tony Migliozzi (So., St. Thomas Aquinas H.S.) in the 10,000 meters in 31:46.96
and the men’s 4x800-meter relay team of James Zeuch (Jr., Galion H.S.), Mitch
Williams (Fr., Celina H.S.), Bryce Pulley (Fr., Cuyahoga Falls H.S.) and Sinick
in 7:52.93. Taking third place in an event for the Pioneer men were Kyle Wagner (Fr., Green H.S.) in the triple jump (41’ 8”), Paul Henderson (Sr., Field H.S.) in the hammer throw (133’ 8”), Pulley in the 1500 meters (4:11.96), Paul Robinson (Sr., Field H.S.) in the 10,000 meters (32:15.51) and Shane McLaughlin (Jr., Caldwell H.S.) and Anthony Lombardi (Fr., Tuslaw H.S.), who tied for third in the high jump at 6’ 2”. Caleb Celuch also cleared 6’ 2” in the high jump event but placed sixth due to number of misses. For the Malone women, numerous student-athletes took
first-place honors including Lori Ickes (Jr., Smithville H.S.) in the javelin
(124’ 9”), Lindsey Pifher (Jr., Colonel Crawford H.S.) in the 3000-meter
steeplechase (11:18.53), Gabrielle Wuensch (Jr., New London H.S.) in the 10,000
meters (38:35.73), and the women’s 4x800-meter relay team of Kayleigh Bildstein
(Jr., Madison H.S.), Becky Neitzel (So., Malvern H.S.), Caitlin Sharp (So.,
East Canton H.S.) and Ashton Avery (So., Canton McKinley H.S.) in 9:19.19. Third-place finishers were Hanzie and Becky Rospotynski (Sr., Copley H.S.), who tied for third in the pole vault at 9’ 6.25”, Beth Costello (Jr., Canton South H.S.) in the long jump (17’ .75”), Ickes in the discus (129’ 11”), Hines in the 5000 meters (18:33.47), Erin Bauer (So., Loveland H.S.) in the 1500 meters (4:51.73), Wohlheter in the 400-meter hurdles (1:07.80) and Page Nagy (Fr., Rocky River H.S.) in the 5000-meter race walk (36:19.89).

Men’s Track & Field Team Captures NCCAA National Title; Women Place SecondThe Malone University men’s track & field team captured

by Taylor University) last Thursday through Saturday while the Pioneer women’s
team finished as the national runner-up. Numerous athletes from both Malone teams earned NCCAA All-America status (top three in an event) and the Pioneers also had several athletes capture individual national title honors. For the men’s team, five athletes earned individual national titles while the men’s 4x800 meter relay team also took first place. Individual national champions for the men included Chris Sinick (Sr., Field H.S.) in the 1500 meters (3:59.06), Paul Robinson (Sr., Field H.S.) in the 5000 meters (15:06.92), James Zeuch (Jr., Galion H.S.) in the 3000-meter steeplechase (9:20.10), Jason Rook (So., New Philadelphia H.S.) in the pole vault (15’ 9”)and Kyle Wagner (Fr., Green H.S.) in the decathlon (5884 points). Men’s Track & Field Team Places 20th At NAIA Outdoor Nationals, Women 37th; Chris Sinick Earns School-Record 11th NAIA All-America HonorThe Malone University men’s track & field team finished 20th among 69 teams scoring points at the NAIA National Championships in Marion, Indiana last Thursday through Saturday while the Malone women’s team placed in a tie for 37th among 65 teams scoring at the event. The Pioneer men tallied 17 points as Wayland Baptist (TX) University won the men’s national title with 70 points. The Pioneer women’s team scored six points as Azusa Pacific (CA) University took the women’s national title with 61 points. Three individuals on the men’s squad earned All-America honors while a Malone women’s relay team also pocketed All-America accolades. For the men, the biggest story of the national event was the
All-America honor won by senior Chris Sinick (Field H.S.) in the 1500
meters. In the final weekend of
competition in his Malone career, Sinick placed third in the 1500-meter finals
in a time of 3:49.94 to earn his 11th NAIA All-America recognition
(including both track and cross country) at the school. This honor moved him into sole possession of
having the most NAIA All-America awards of any student-athlete in Malone
history (all sports), breaking the three-way tie of 10 honors that he had been
in with 2005 Malone graduate Dave Gramlich and current junior Aaron Melhorn
(Fairless H.S.), who had been ill for the final few weeks of this season.
