Pathways to Possibilities

Into The Woods

The Malone University School of Arts and Sciences – Department of Theatre will present the fractured fairy tales of James Lapine and Stephen Sondheim’s Tony Award-winning musical, Into the Woods, November 10 through14 and 17 through 21 in the Performing Arts Hall of Founders Hall on the Canton campus.  Curtain times are 8 p.m. each evening.  Tickets are $10 adults, $5 students for all shows and can be purchased by calling the Malone University box office at 330-471-8202.

Inspired by Bruno Bettelheim's 1976 book, The Uses of Enchantment, the musical begins with the plots of Brothers Grimm fairy tales and explores them more deeply to unveil the consequences brought about by each character’s actions after they lived happily ever after. Imagine an ambivalent Cinderella; a blood-thirsty Little Red Riding Hood; Prince Charming with a roving eye; a witch who raps!  The different takes on familiar characters is intertwined with the play’s original story of a Baker and his wife who long to have a child.  The musical also includes references to several other well-known tales.

Into the Woods boasts a rich, Tony Award-winning score by Stephen Sondheim, including the following:
